DUFFYDAIRY Lakes.
Duffy lake:
Duffy lake is located approx 45 min south east of the city of kamloops. This lake is around 23hectares and is at 3805 ft elevation. It has a large campground (forestry) located at the north end of the lake. The one big downfall for fisherman at this lake is that it has over the years become a motorbike haven. If you want to try to fish this lake in peace try staying somewhere else and drive in to fish. Dairy lake is about 15 min away and has a small forestry campground. The lake has some nice shoals at the south and east sides of the lake. again fishing this lake in the spring (late may-early june) can produce some nice fish. The flie of choice at Duffy for me is a size 10-12 dragon cast to the shoals of dragged very slowly behind a float tube.Other flies that have produced for me at this lake in spring are Chronies, scuds, leaches, half backs, full backs, and the always trustworthy Spratlys. I have fished Duffy 10-15 times in the last 6 years and have found that the best time of year is late May early June. For casting flies try the far end (south) of the lake in the head of the bay, for a slow troll try starting on the eastern shore just past the campground and work your way to the back bay, keeping an eye out for the shallows that come out near the bay entrance. This lake can produce some large fish if you give it the time, i have caught many fish over the 4lb mark but it does take some time.
Dairy Lake:
This is one of my favorite lakes in the kamloops region. Due to its elevation it has a later ice off and turn over than close by Duffy. It is located about 15 min south of duffy on a decent gravel road that has some rough spots in it at certin times of the year. The lake is at 4789 ft elevation and is 26 hectares. This lake has some very large shoals andhas a large sunken “Island” right off shore from the campground. I find that this lake starts to produce in early June and will stay good all summer long. I always start on this lake by doing a slow kick around the south end of the lake just at the drop off and on the eastern shore from the north bays head to the cabin located on the east side to see if i can locate the fish comming onto the shoals. Be carful at the north bay entrance it gets very very shollow and stays that way for the hole way into the north bay.Once i see them i anchor and start casting. I found that in Dairy lake the best flie to use(belive it or not) is the Knoff lake special, over the years i have caught 2-3 times more fish with this fly at Dairy than all other flies together.( don’t ask me why?) In late june early July this lake has a very good traveling sedge hatch and can be a boat load of fun for those who give it a shot. The fish in Dairy fight like hell and take multiple runs, but they are not huge. The biggest fish i have seen pulled out has been 5-6 pounds but that is rare. I would say that the average size here is around 2 pounds, but like i said they fight hard. Other flies to try at Dairy are Leeches,Dragons,Damsils,scuds,Chronies,52 buicks, and of course like in most kamloops region lakes Mayflies. Give this lake a try it’s worth the drive up, but get there early there are ony 6or7 campsites at the lake.
Wishing everyone tight lines and tons of fish.
