COMMUNITY LAKE

Published by flyfishfanatic at 8:11 pm under Uncategorized

This lake is located norht\east of Kamloops, it is 40hectares and at 4556ft in elevation. This bute of a lake has huge shoals and is a great lake to fish with the fly. There are 2 island in this lake and one large bay on the east side of the lake. This bay which i have named the toilet bowl because it has a large shoal(6-8′ deep) all the way around with a harsh drop off going down as deep as 30′. The majority of the lake is one large shoal (6-10′ in depth) with the islands located at the far north end. I have only fished this lake 4 times with the first time being a exploritory trip. I spent the better part of the first day just crusing the lake slowly and getting a feel for the layout. I did come to the lake with a topo\depth chart but i wanted to look around for myself. Once i started fishing i fell in love with this lake, there are so many elements to this lake it’s hard not to. The fish in this lake fight like a demon but i have found that they are very skiddish. In the shallows i seen hundereds of fish just crusing around, but found that you needed to be beyond quite to not send then running. One time i was fishing the far north end behind one of the islands and i saw at least 20 fish milling around, but even with the softest of cast sent them running. The technique that i found works really well in the shallows is casting your fly behind them letting out a good 60-80 yards of line do a slow kick until you have taken up the slack that you stripped out and then do a slow retrive. This worked like a charm in the shallows, and i was into fish after fish. The toilet bowl is a different story, i found parking yourself in the shallows and trying to cast parallel withe the drop off is the best. The travelling sedge hatch here is great allowing for some great dry fly action in the last week of june first 2 weeks of July. Other flies that produce well her are, Dragons, damsils, leeches, mayflies,Boatmen, and tom thumbs. I did try to do some chronie fishing but found it very slow every time i tried. The lake has a small forestry camp site on the south west shore that would accomidate 8 or so fisherman. Make sure to take a good map of the area because there are quite a few spur roads that come off the main road. This lake is just off the main Knouff lake road approx 15 km south of Knouff lake itself, It can be a little hard to find but once you find it you will never forget this gem.

Wishing everyone tight lines and tons of fish.
