Rivers and lakes of the kootenays. (South eastern BC)
The Michelle river is a small river located in the south west corner of British Columbia. This River is more like a large Creek, the nice thing is it holds large west slope cutthroat trout. I have only fished this small river a few times due to its location from where i am, but the few times i have been there it has been well worth it. The river is only in BC for a limited time and then it turns into Alberta. I have found that the river also has limited access from roads, but if you are willing to do some walking and a little bush waking it is a great little spot to fish. i have caught and released more than a few fish which were in the 16-18″ range, not bad for a small river.
he St Mary’s River is a fairly large river also in the kootenays. This is a wonderful river which holds tons of fish. This river is a great river to float down in a pontoon boat or drift boat. The access to this river from shore is very limited, there are only a few places that are easy to get to from shore by car, if you want you can walk in but the river has alot of steep banks and this may stop you from getting you to it. If you have a boat, a good place to launch is at or close to St Mary’s lake/ From there you can drift all the way down stream to Fort Steele into lake Koocanusa. There re some rough spots in the river so be careful if you are floating it. Also be aware that your fresh water fishing license is not valid here you will need to pick up a classified water one. There is a good flyfishing store in Marysville close to kimberly where you can get a classified waters license. I have found that in the summer months The best fly to use is a grass hopper, try it you won’t be disappointed.
Duck/Leech Lakes These lakes are located at the south end of Kootenay lake near the town of Creston BC. If you want to try your luck at bass fishing on the fly you have to give these lakes a try. The Bass in these lakes are fat and fight like a demon. On my last trip to these lakes i wanted to fish from my float tube, but because of the wind and the mass amount of weeds in these lakes it was impossible. I started fishing from shore and i was immediately into Bass. I cast into the weeds and with the first twitch of my fly i had a hit and a fish. I fished the lake from the same spot for about 2 hours and i landed around 15 Bass with the largest hitting 9 pounds. Like i said if you want to have a blast with Bass this is well worth the drive and the time.
There are amny good lakes in this area of BC and some even better rivers, Give it a try you won’t be disapointed.
Tight lines and fun times.

It’s Kootenay. Not kootney.
