Fund started to assist angler who lost home

Friends of a longtime Kamloops angler, target shooter and outdoor retailer hope the city’s sports community will rally to help one of their own.

Ron Thompson, co-owner of the Kamloops Fly Shop, and his wife Maureen suffered a catastrophic loss Wednesday when fire struck their home, located in the G & M trailer park.

Steve Jennings, Thompson’s business partner, said Thompson had just returned from a day of fishing to find his home ablaze. He managed to get his wife and their grandson safely out of the small trailer they have called home for many years, then watched helplessly as firefighters fought the flames, sparked by a grease fire in the kitchen.

Much of the couple’s belongings were destroyed by flames, or suffered heavy smoke damage. They will sort through the trailer in the next day or so to see what can be salvaged, Jennings said.

The couple did not have fire insurance.

Jennings said to compound the problem, the Thompsons have been told their trailer space in the park is not theirs anymore, as the park is only allowing replacement of old units with new ones.

The Thompsons cannot afford the cost of a new unit for the space. He and his wife will stay with family for a while, until they are able to find an apartment or other lodgings.

Jennings said he and others are organizing a drive to help the Thompsons out. It’s hoped they will collect enough cash and furnishings to get the couple started as they rebuild.

The Auction will run from now until 14Dec(midnight).
Hi-bidders will be updated periodically on the corresponding thread, Please avoid last minute bids, bids received after 12:01AM 15Dec(which is midnight 14Dec ) will not be accepted. We don’t have the sophisticated timing systems like Ebay. Also there will will not be any proxy bidding (ie. if an item’s auction is at $150 and someone bids $500, the price will jump all the way up to $500, not $151)
