Sage 2550 fly reel (Mini Review)

Published by flyfishfanatic at 7:54 pm under General

I just bought a Sage 2550 fly reel and thought that I would do ma very short review on it. I can’t do a full review as of yet, I will as soon as I get her out on the water a take her for a test run.

From the SAGE WEBSITE:

Our 2500 Series lightweight, large-arbor reels feature a unique, offset 3:1 gear reduction drag system and numbered, repeatable adjustment knob for consistent operation in all conditions. Self-lubricating drive gears and sealed graphite drag washers mean 2500 Series reels are maintenance free and unaffected by sand, dunkings or blistering runs. These reels are made from hard-anodized, aerospace-grade aluminum and are approximately 20% lighter than equivalent size 3000D reels.

Weight 4-3/4 oz

Diameter 3-5/8″

Backing 100 yards (20lb)

I have had a very close look at the reel and have put it on my rod and cast it around a bit in the yard. i have found it to have a very nice ultra smooth drag system. It has almost unlimited adjustments for setting the drag, and it has a nice large knob for making the adjustments.

The spare spools available for the reel will cost you around half the price of the reel, but are well worth it. The reel has a “press fit” for the spool. There is no button or switch to remove the spool, just a good tug and she is off.

The reel is a large arbor and a 3-1 gear ratio, this will give you the advantage of being able to keep up with the fish if they are making that suicide run at you.

All in all, so far I am VERY happy with it, and I will be giving her a try as soon as I can and will do a full review then.
