New to Fly Fishing?

Are you new to Fly Fishing?

As many of my readers know, I am a Flyfishing instructor here in BC, Canada. I have taught MANY people this great sport.

The reason for this short post is simple. I would like to try to give one, and only one small piece of advice. Many of my students ask the same question so I thought I would answer it here.

I divide my classes into 2 days. day 1 Theory (4Hours) and day 2 Casting (3-4 hours). In the first day most students ask, “When are we going to learn to cast?”

This is my advice, Learn the theory part first, concentrate on the Entomology end of the sport. My resonong for this is simple, If you can cast a fly 100′ and someone else can only cast 50′, but your knowledge of the entomology is limited and his is vast, he WILL out fish you 10 to 1 every day!!!!

This sport is VERY dependent on your knowledge of the bugs, how they move, where they live, and at what time of year the fish will target them. Without this knowledge, you WILL NOT have all the succsess you could have with it.

Just a small word of advice to all the new and novice Flyfishers out there!!
