What Flies to use just after Ice off??
It’s that time of year again in British Columbia, Canada where I live. The Ice has come off many of the lower lakes and is starting to come off some of the higher elevation lakes as well.
This is a very late year, I was speaking to the resort owners at Roche lake near Kamloops, BC, and they informed me that the lake has not been this late since the mid 70s. But winter is starting to loosen it’s grip on the higher lakes in the province , and fishing season is upon us.
In this post I will be making suggestions on the flies to use at this early time of year in the lakes of B.C.
1- Chironomids.
These are the #1 flies to be using at this time of year. There are many different patterns to use, but the four I would use this close to Ice off are, Bloodworms, Black snowcone with red ribbing, Chromie’s, and green with silver ribbing.
2- Miro Leeches.
Micro leeches can be fished from a sinking line, or at this time of year, I fish them under an indicator. I would stick with 3 different color patterns, Red/Black, and Brown, and all red
Obviously, there are many more patterns that are good at this time of year, But these are the ones I personally have had the best success with.
Other patterns to have with you are;
Dragon Flies
Damsel Flies
Scuds
I hope that this will help my readers have a better outing when heading out on the water. As I have said before, If you see me out on the water, or on the campground, please don’t hesitate to come over and say hi. I will give you all the pointers I can.
